FMC heavy-duty brake friction materials for advanced R&D testing

At Friction Marketing Co. (FMC), innovation drives our business and product development forward. As a leading supplier of high-performance brake friction materials, we’re constantly pushing the limits of existing technologies – demonstrated by our investment of several million dollars over the past 12 months into research and development. We’ve upgraded our testing facilities with state-of-the-art dynamometers and proprietary software, allowing us to replicate the most extreme braking scenarios in-house and tailor materials to specific customer needs. This investment has resulted in quieter, longer-lasting, and better-performing friction materials designed for heavy-duty brake applications.

Why we invested in brake friction materials R&D

We know that our customer base works in sectors where heavy-duty brake failure isn’t an option. To support them, we continually expand our ability to develop and test brake friction materials that can handle even the most extreme of demands.

This is why, over the past year, we’ve invested several million dollars in new, European-designed dynamometers and developed proprietary software that allows us to simulate and analyse heavy-duty braking events with greater precision than ever before.

What’s new: technology that raises the bar

We’ve invested in new technology and innovation that allows us to develop safer, more accurate brake friction materials, including:

  • Brand-new dynamometers, created in collaboration with our European partners, which can replicate braking conditions even harsher than those seen in real-world heavy-duty brake applications.
  • Proprietary software which works seamlessly alongside our new equipment, allowing our development team to analyse heavy-duty brake phases to the millisecond. Capturing toque, power, and energy transfer at every stage, this detailed data enables us to fine-tune brake friction material formulations for each specific application, rather than relying on generic solutions.

The benefits for our customers

Thanks to these innovations, we can now develop brake friction materials with:

  • Better engagement behaviour, for smoother, more predictable braking.
  • Lower noise levels, to allow for quieter operation.
  • Longer life, extending the time between maintenance and reducing downtime.

We’re able to bring new materials to market faster and with greater confidence in their real-world performance. Our customers can now benefit from brake friction materials that are tailored to their specific operating conditions, helping them improve safety, extend component life, and reduce costs.

Proof it works: real-world success stories

Our R&D advancements have already delivered measurable results.

In the mining sector, our development of braking materials has demonstrated a significant extension of the lifetime of the brake. Customers who replaced OEM materials with ours, such as advanced friction paper (AFP) and Carbon, have seen thousands of additional hours of service life.
